Guide
Your first visit to a baby bank
What baby banks provide, how referrals work, and what to expect when you visit.
Baby banks provide essential items for families with babies and young children who cannot afford them. If you're a parent or carer struggling to afford nappies, formula, clothing, or equipment — a baby bank can help.
What baby banks provide
- Nappies and baby wipes
- Baby formula and bottles
- Baby clothing (newborn to toddler)
- Blankets and bedding
- Moses baskets and cots
- Prams and pushchairs
- Toys and books
- Maternity clothing and toiletries
How referrals work
Most baby banks operate on referral from a professional who knows your situation — a health visitor, midwife, social worker, family support worker, or children's centre. If you're already in contact with any of these, ask if they can refer you.
If you're not in contact with any of these services, contact the baby bank directly. Many can advise on how to get a referral or may accept self-referrals.
What happens during your visit
After referral, you'll typically be offered an appointment. A volunteer or staff member will talk through what you need and prepare a bundle tailored to your family — the right size clothing, the right stage formula, the right equipment.
Baby bank volunteers are parents and carers themselves. The experience is designed to be warm, practical, and dignified.
