About the directory
About Open Door Wakefield
A directory of support services for people experiencing poverty across Wakefield District — food banks, clothing banks, baby banks, school uniform schemes, and hygiene products.
What is Open Door Wakefield?
Open Door Wakefield is a directory of support services for people experiencing poverty across Wakefield District. It helps anyone — individuals, families, and frontline workers — find the help they need, quickly and without barriers.
The name "Open Door" means exactly that. No referrals, no forms, no judgment. Just a clear, searchable directory of support services near you.
What you'll find here
The directory covers five categories of support:
- Food — food banks, community pantries, community kitchens, and meal schemes
- Clothing — clothing banks and pre-loved clothing services
- Baby items — baby banks providing nappies, formula, clothing, and equipment
- School uniform — uniform banks, swap schemes, shoe schemes, and council grants
- Hygiene — free toiletries and period products
Who runs Open Door Wakefield?
Open Door Wakefield is a partnership between two Wakefield-based organisations:
Young Lives Consortium — the recognised infrastructure body for Wakefield's voluntary sector, representing over 70 member organisations. YLC manages the directory — sourcing, verifying, and keeping every listing up to date from their direct knowledge of local services. They work in partnership with Wakefield Council, the NHS, and community groups across the district.
Blue Penguin Digital — a Wakefield-based web development business. Blue Penguin Digital designed and built the Open Door Wakefield platform, hosts it, maintains it, and provides it as a sponsored public service. The company specialises in building websites for charities and community organisations across Yorkshire.
Why it exists
People experiencing poverty in Wakefield cannot find help when they need it. Information is scattered across council web pages, outdated PDFs, Facebook groups, and individual charity websites. Frontline workers spend hours manually searching for services instead of helping people.
Open Door Wakefield brings all that information together in one place — accurate, up-to-date, and easy to use.
How listings are maintained
Every listing comes from YLC's direct knowledge of local services — not scraped from national databases. Listings are verified on a quarterly cycle with visible "last verified" dates so you know the information is current. If you run a service and want to be listed, or notice something that needs updating, get in touch.
