How to get help with school uniform
Uniform banks, swap schemes, shoe schemes, and council grants across Wakefield District. A practical guide for parents and carers.
School uniform costs can run to hundreds of pounds per child per year — especially with branded items, PE kits, and school shoes. This guide explains the support available in Wakefield District.
Uniform banks
Uniform banks collect and redistribute pre-loved school uniform in good condition. They're often school-specific — contact your child's school office first, as many schools run their own uniform bank or know where the nearest one is.
Most uniform banks welcome donations of outgrown uniform and redistribute it freely to families who need it. There is no referral process for most — simply make contact and ask.
Uniform swap events
Schools and community groups run swap events, typically at the start and end of terms. Bring outgrown uniform and swap it for the next size up. These are informal, community-run, and free.
School shoe schemes
Several local charities and some schools run shoe voucher schemes providing new school shoes. Ask at your child's school, local family hub, or Citizens Advice about what's available in your area.
Wakefield Council uniform grant
Wakefield Council offers school uniform grants for eligible families. These are means-tested — check the Council website for current eligibility criteria, application windows, and amounts. Grants typically cover children moving up to primary or secondary school.
